This comment thread is just supreme intellectual navel gazing and using hindsight to recast what happened. Science is messy, communicating is messier, acting as if every bit of mess comes from some negarious agenda or that somehow the mess was avoidable with finite budgets, time, and knowledge is ... completely against the entire history of human behavior. Your time on this planet is short, generally full of ignorance, confusion, and lying to yourself. By all means learn from our mistakes and reduce that ignorance and confusion going forward, but if your conclusion is to reject scientific inquiry as the only tool we have to move forward, you are just contributing to the confusion and ignorance.
