Meta acquires Within despite FTC concerns
- PaulHoule 4y agoIf you look at what Facebook is doing as opposed to what they say they are doing, you see that Facebook is playing the spoiler in the VR space. Whenever a company is successful in VR, Facebook buys it. Frequently it shuts that company's products down, as it is planning to do with Echo VR https://mixed-news.com/en/john-carmack-criticizes-echo-vr-shutdown/ https://mixed-news.com/en/john-carmack-criticizes-echo-vr-sh... Facebook justifies this by saying a game with a few 10,000's of users doesn't move the needle for them, they need a game with 10,000,000's of users. Trouble is it is a lot easier to shut down a site with 10,000's of users than it is to make one with 10,000,000's users. It is certain that some people who are booted from Echo VR will hang up their VR headsets. It is certain they'll spend a lot of money trying to make something new but not certain that they'll get any traction. VR businesses that anybody else would be consider a wild success are considered a failure by Facebook. If Facebook is unable to succeed at VR that is all the more reason why the FTC, gamers, shareholders and the rest of us should get a restraining order against Meta that forbids them from acquiring any more companies... At least until Zuckerberg divests himself of a controlling interest in Meta.
