I was fortunate to grow up in the 80s, I was allowed to freely roam the neighbourhood, but spent most of my summer days at the playground because it was awesome (aka dangerous).
I credit a great deal to the formative '9 lives' skills I developed as a child in in that playground to prepare me for a lifetime of rock climbing, bmx/mountain biking, mountaineering and surfing all while managing the seemingly unlikely feat of keeping my ass in one piece. I'm 46 and I still do stupid things on a regular basis, I never learned my lesson.
A study came out recently that confirms my biases in a way I didn't anticipate: children of overprotective parent tend to live less[1]
