This dip in price isn't a reflection of what was thought about the mistake. Google is supposed to be an AI powerhouse. Google has models that are already much stronger than what's publicly accessible. Google has made a decision to not deploy this kind of AI. Google says they don't feel ready to release AI without safeguards. When there were no alternatives, people just accepted what Google was saying and moved on, but ChatGPT and other OpenAI products show that it is possible and Google is choosing not to prioritize it. My guess is that certain leadership at Google couldn't fathom the cost at moderation and filtering AI output. Youtube moderation makes it clear that Google will automate as much of the content moderation pipeline as humanly possible, that's too big of a risk with something like an AI model.
Searches fit into one of two main categories, searches where you are looking for software/product/services, or searches where you are looking for information. ChatGPT outclasses everything else in the second category. I'm not sure how long it will take for LLMs to also produce meaningful results for the first. This mistake made sure that all of the new user that OpenAI gained are going to stay with OpenAI.
Interestingly the mistake of Bard isn't painting ChatGPT negatively.
