I predict that the long term result is that eventually software security failures become so pandemic that disclaimers of liability for software that currently protect developers will be declared void by regulators and civil/criminal liability is applied to ISV and OEMs and professional licensing is required for developers in security-critical contexts. Yes, I hear the cries of "gatekeeping" already; physicians weren't keen on the idea of medical licensing either when it was introduced but things got bad enough that it happened. We, as an industry, can't keep screwing over the public with insecure code as often as we are and not expect backlash.
