Mozilla's Abandoned Servo Web Engine Is Making a Comeback in 2023
- Laaas 4y agoWho is funding it?
- psychphysic 4y agoOnce I realised Servo was never intended to be anything but a test bed it became completely uninteresting. Im only replying here as a warning to anyone intrigued by it. This is typical Rust dynamics anything at all written in Rust is portrayed like something out of star trek.
- yoavm 4y agoMuch of what what was created in Servo was later integrated into Firefox. Test beds are interesting because ideas are tested in them, and the successful ones make it into the real product.
- timschmidt 4y ago"Hello everybody out there using minix - I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones. This has been brewing since april, and is starting to get ready. I'd like any feedback on things people like/dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat (same physical layout of the file-system (due to practical reasons) among other things). I've currently ported bash(1.08) and gcc(1.40), and things seem to work. This implies that I'll get something practical within a few months, and I'd like to know what features most people would want. Any suggestions are welcome, but I won't promise I'll implement them :-) Linus (torvalds@kruuna.helsinki.fi) PS. Yes - it's free of any minix code, and it has a multi-threaded fs. It is NOT portable (uses 386 task switching etc), and it probably never will support anything other than AT-harddisks, as that's all I have :-(. — Linus Torvalds"
- slondr 4y agoI thought servo was just renamed “Firefox 57” years ago. Am I misremembering?
- tehbeard 4y agoI think there was quantum which was something to do with the render system? Where as servo was a from the ground up replacement for gecko (FF's web engine).
- shaunsingh0207 4y agoThe servo project was always just a test bed. When the team was laid off, useful parts made it into firefox, and the rest got branched out into its own repository and project, now available on GitHub. Namely, the Stylo css engine was fully integrated.
