‘Britcoin’ digital currency could be in use by end of decade
- jjgreen 4y ago"... the digital pound would not be anonymous because the ability to identify and verify users is necessary to prevent financial crime." Oh yes, financial crime would be the worry.

- throwaway8689 4y agoSaw something in the headlines about initially limiting how much you can hold. I can't see a use case for the average person who can already make remote payments by card and can hold as much GBP as they like in their bank account.
- ElfinTrousers 4y agoThis seems kind of silly, like the underlying motivation is FOMO. Most money in industrialized countries is already digital: it exists only as a notation in a database somewhere. Especially in Britain, where use of debit cards for small purchases caught on early and in a big way, what problem would this hypothetical currency solve?
- disadvantage 4y agoCame here to say this. We are already mostly cashless now, and digital currency exists in the form of credit/debit cards/Apple Pay/Google Pay

- karmakaze 4y agoSuch a low bar "by end of decade". The announcement is an embarrassment in itself. And yet I don't think they'd have it sorted out by then either because they couldn't agree what it's for or not for.
