News flash: the grass looks greener on the other side! I’ve done both, most of my advice is the same as others who’ve contracted. One thing I’ll add: get retainer contracts! I had one contract that paid a couple hundred per month for me to be “on-call” if the main programmer was out in a small one-man shop. If they didn’t use their allotted hours, every couple months we’d check in, review something etc. I got a full time job but if I were still contracting this is where I’d focus a lot of attention: finding gigs that pay you monthly for maintenance, on-call etc.
