Funny thing about this, by the time my phone gets to 2-3 years old, I tend to want to replace it anyways. Not so much because I'm craving the new thing, but because the battery now lasts for like 2 hours and is impractical to replace, the case and display have accumulated some small cracks and defects, or I accidentally destroyed or seriously damaged it.
