The essay takes a very long time to not say very much. I propose, meanwhile, another necessary-but-not-sufficient rule: a game is not a game unless each player, at some point during it, takes at least one deliberate action or choice that in some way affects the outcome. This rules out a vast number of pastimes aimed at small children, tedious both for the intended audience and for the well-meaning adults hoping to share some quality time. Mankind would be well-served if labelling these things "games" opened one up to claims of false advertising.
