yes I am working with an API and its obvious that the people that developed it did not want do the hard work to make the api what it needs to be (and what my employer is paying for). You could say the same about the original SMTP standard it dodged a lot of the "hard issues" when you compare it with the richer and harder to develop X.400 standard.
