Can you not use pass through mode on the noise cancelling ones?

  Of course I can but I am purposefully reserving the snug closed back headphones exclusively for my focus/deep work. The point is to preserve the purity of the 'environmental cue' so that cups on + cup of cofee almost immediately transitions me into 'flow' mode. You can look it up there is a lot of cognitive research on environmental cues and their role on focus and memory retrieval.
