I still think it's mostly true. The people let go in the last round of layoffs where I work were the OGs who were coasting on their reputation. The people I know who lost their jobs for no fault of their own are the people who were laid off because an entire product/service was shut down--but usually even then they'd cherrypick the high performers out and move them to another team.
