An amazing book indeed. Vaneigem's influence inside the group was perhaps even stronger than Debord's. It's also impossible to fully understand D's work without understanding V's, and vice-versa. V not being mentioned even once only shows this piece of content is very low quality. Dérive was most def not the "key tactic of the Situationists" and it made me laugh - this author doesn't even seem to have read the main works from this group, honestly.
These books are very hard to translate..
Comparing the first few paragraphs from your link to the original in french, I can already see a lot of potential for misreading, even though I'm not a native english speaker so I could be wrong.
For instance, the last word in the third paragraph is "profit" when it seems to me correct term would be "benefit": particularly in the context of vaneigem's ideas on superseding the trade economy.
On the first paragraph "I have no intention of revealing what there is of my life" is not the same as "Ce qu’il y a de vécu dans ce livre" - Vaneigem would never reify life like that - particularly when that happens to be the exact theme of the book. Also he's not speaking about "my life", which is an 'individualist-owner' perspective on it.
I've had a similar problem when I tried to read some Charles Fourier stuff in english: it just didn't correlate to the original, and left out A LOT OF MEANING.
I've always wondered if only-english readers were really capable of accessing the meaning of text like these - very distant languages, more so when it comes to social and philosophic thought.
- euroderf 4y agoMy comment had in mind a paper version, the one shown on the left-hand side of image[0]. I can't comment on the quality of its translation, but AFAICT the ideas came thru very clearly. Yes, I am sure this book is VERY difficult to translate accurately. - gverrilla 4y agoI see! But I'm now curious: if you are willing to take the effort, it would be nice if you could verify your paper version vs the 2 passages I specified. I'm asking this because I have a paper one in portuguese which has an EXCELLENT translation (I often checked the original while reading it), but if I search the public internet for pdf's all that is available is a very very very bad translation full of mistakes - which is sad. Would be interesting if we could verify the same thing for the english version! Good Sunday!
- euroderf 4y agoHmm, it's probably in storage. Can try.
