Computer science is like Maths. Do you need to know real analysis and delta epsilon proofs to do calculus? It just amounts to gatekeeping if you are using an abstract and higher level course as an introductory class. Introductory classes should be fun and approachable. The Harvard CS50 is a good example - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YoXxevp1WRQ&t=101 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YoXxevp1WRQ&t=101

The Harvard course welcomes non-majors and is part of a liberal education, it's not comparable to an introductory course for majors at a competitive engineering school.
