One notable part of Amazon's success story: book readers are rich. Paper books are a significant indicator of genuine wealth. What's unique about books however, is that you never discover what to buy on Amazon. You get the title recommended to you off-Amazon. Then go straight to Amazon and find the title, in a commoditised print on demand operation. For just about every other product under the sun, not the same.
