I majored in Cognitive Science back in the early 90's at UCSD. I got pretty disillusioned at the combination of barking up the wrong tree, model-wise (The Bitter Lesson* had not yet been learned) and the just-not-powerful-enough compute we had available to truly test more interesting methods. Switched to dev work to pay the bills, but always hoped a real breakthrough would happen in my lifetime.
The past six months have had me excited about tech for the first time decades. I'm just happy to be here, experiencing it.
