Ask HN: What options would US military have to bring balloon down gracefully?
- Someone 4y agoDrop a parachutist on it, or just a large weighted net.
- sidcool 4y agoThey just downed the balloon.
- dredmorbius 4y agoShoot it down with a missile: <https://www.nytimes.com/live/2023/02/04/us/china-spy-balloon https://www.nytimes.com/live/2023/02/04/us/china-spy-balloon> HN: <https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34658095 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34658095>
- simonblack 4y agoSuch a lot of hoo-haa over a balloon before it is properly investigated. Look first, then shout if necessary. I will predict that it is just a normal disposable meteorological balloon that should have popped long-since instead of drifting for days. Just more long-lived trash instead of being recycled in today's world.
- russfink 4y agoWere terrestrial or airborne lasers not possible? I’m no expert - would love to hear discussion on this.
- ecf 4y agoThey didn’t need to bring the balloon down at all. I guarantee every piece of circuitry being carried was fried as soon as it entered Alaska.
