Wall Street Owns the Country
- manuelabeledo 4y agoSo yeah, we have had a plutocracy for quite some time now. Wasn’t the country essentially founded by wealthy landowners who wanted to keep voting rights for their class? It seems to me that this was by design.
- christophilus 4y ago> who wanted to keep voting rights for their class This is true, but a less cynical read would be that this was a side-effect, and what they were aiming for was reserving the act of voting for only those who were informed, educated, etc. Land ownership was a rough proxy for that. I’m not so sure it’s a bad idea to restrict voting, but the problem is, no one wants to be the one left out, and someone will always be disenfranchised.
- xracy 4y agoGiven that this has been historically used to disenfranchise minorities, it seems to me like a reasonable take of the situation.
- jonahbenton 4y agoStill does!
- thriftwy 4y agoFor any piece of property there is going to be a person who owns it, as well as bank account which holds the corresponding amount of money. Thus, any attempt at limiting monetary supply (via gold standard) or personal wealth (via demagoguery) seem innately fruitless to me.
- christophilus 4y ago> For any piece of property there is going to be a person who owns it, as well as bank account which holds the corresponding amount of money. One could envision a society where neither of these were givens.
- drewcoo 4y agoI can even envision that right here where America came to be.
