Musk Is Pulling the Plug on a Tool That Made Twitter Great
- andirk 4y agoWhy not just throttle third parties usage rather than charge for all of it? Are there other popular APIs that charge for _any_ use of it? What a joke. I hope there's light at the end of this tunnel, unlike his solution to California traffic of putting a couple tunnels deep under Interstate 5. I never bought in to this guy but now it's like EVERY idea is dumber than the last [0]. These headlines starting to read like inadvertent promotions for Mastadon. - aquarium87 4y agoThis kind of data is constantly abused, and tied to private data via games/ads/etc. Someone has to pay the bills, and advertisers need to be relieved of their power. The complaints about killing hobby bots are fine, but serious, its $100 a month. Most of these researchers, academics, get rich quick data bros etc SHOULD pay for access to all this data. Users generate it, and then get abused by advertisers in return, while API wielding bros get everything for free without giving back or being abused? Naw. Users generate content, those exploiting the data can pay their fare share. They probably hammer the datafuck out of twitter all the time as well. Probably for garbage reasons like getting an alert within ten seconds of someone posting so they can spam ideological Messages within 60 seconds. I'm thinking krassenstein bros etc.
- neximo64 4y agoThe article in question says the API is what makes twitter great. I would disagree since the content is what makes it great. Content made via the official twitter app via a person. The use of API by bots, such as crypto bots and bots that like your posts in hopes of directing you to their profile, can lead to an inundation of DMs from bots. The API lets twitter's analytics tools and the ability to analyze user data in bulk can make it easier to extract valuable insights for advertisers. Additionally, while the integration of third-party apps may come with some trade-offs, it's exciting to see Twitter introducing new features after all these years. The third-party apps hindered twitters ability to add features and control the platform.
