      He’s joking. What I’ve learned from this incident is just how paranoid and ready to panic so many people have become.

  Frankly, as members of the public we don't know what is going on so we cannot really comment. That being said, the US has used spy planes, etc. in the past (had an U2 shot down over the USSR in 1960) and may still be using them or similar. So assuming these are indeed spy balloons the US could simply be wary of escalating the situation by starting a shooting contest. What would then happen next time the US fly too near China or even above China or the South China Sea?

To me that whole story looks suspicious, why would china send spying balloons over there? in a strategic region full of lithium mines, you wouldn't want to scare your potential future partners So it's probably fake balloons in an attempt to create defiance against China, who would do that?
