Yeah, I started building a library in 2020 because of similar thoughts. I tried to buy mostly used books but I’m fairly certain I can look up anything. It still takes some decent change to throw at it but I think it is a write off either way.
Additionally it just makes good sense to have multiple ways to look up information and what is printed is harder to change-in-place so there’s at least some level of authenticity or ability to checksum over time or copies.
- lando2 4y agoSmart, i mainly use libgen (legally) and project gutenberg to achieve a similar albeit digital (ereader) result. Bought a 1985 britannica set (200,000+ pages) for a mere $30.
- pyinstallwoes 4y agoYeah I have done some digial book archiving as well. Figured it should be in multiple formats jsut in case and I was and still am especially worried for the case of integrity of words. It feels too easy for a 'memoryhole' event to occur in an 'updated ebook version.' Bitrot, brainrot, and n-rot. You'know? Thanks for sharing!
