The way children scream for my tablet time worse than they would for a bottle is terrifying.
All those dopamine manipulation techniques made for adults are cleaning up with kids.
- grevrevr 4y agoFrankly, kids want what you have. If it's bad, don't use it yourself! Having kids was the final trigger to make me get rid of my smartphone, although I admit this is an extreme step.
- psychphysic 4y agoI'm gonna make a meme about a modern Harlow maternal contact experiment. It was about how monkeys prefer to hug cloth wrapped wire frames rather than food. https://www.psychologicalscience.org/publications/observer/obsonline/harlows-classic-studies-revealed-the-importance-of-maternal-contact.html https://www.psychologicalscience.org/publications/observer/o...
- aidenn0 4y agoOne of the best things my wife and I did was have a "no phones at the table" rule for ourselves long before our kids were of an age to have a phone. It's made enforcing that rule on our teenagers a complete non-issue now.
- grevrevr 4y agoWe enforce that rule whenever we have guests (typically, family members). Obviously it doesn't need enforcing otherwise, as neither of us has a smart phone. What's interesting is the defensiveness people express when they are are called up on a social behaviour which would be completely unacceptable and weird a few years ago.
- superkuh 4y agoThe way these adults scream out long disproven neuroscience old wive's tales to justify their beliefs is terrifying. All these passive stimuli coming through your normal senses are not in any way hijacking or directly manipulating incentive salience or motivation. They're not drugs. Screen displays do not have the properties of drugs no matter what is displayed on them. Arguing that they do is ignorant and dangerous.
- psychphysic 4y agoLooks like at this time the screen has triggered quite an emotional (probably irrational) response. Besides your point is nonsense.
- superkuh 4y agoDirectly modifying incentive salience via drugs is different than normal environmental stimuli through normal sense perceptions. They require different responses from society and parroting falsehoods like you and others are doing is dangerous. You've already seen what the "drug war" has justified. Bringing that kind of response in to deal with normal aspects of living is wrong. The youtube is dangerous crowd has about as much legitimacy as the 5G radio is dangerous crowd.
- psychphysic 4y agoBlah blah blah. This is all nonsense and has nothing to do with the original comment.
- superkuh 4y agoIt has everything to do with the original comment. I'm trying to explain that "dopamine techniques" isn't a thing anymore than "chakra techniques" but it's obviously not getting through.
