- euroderf 4y agoThe article completely avoids the question of whether the balloon has any capability at all to intentionally change course.
- m348e912 4y agoIt's interesting that they know it's Chinese already.
- cyanydeez 4y agoCall me skeptical, but this smells like fud. https://www.highaltitudescience.com/pages/intro-to-weather-balloons#:~:text=History%20%2D%20One%20of%20the%20earliest,of%20the%20tropopause%20and%20stratosphere https://www.highaltitudescience.com/pages/intro-to-weather-b....
- mrandish 4y agoParsing what the U.S. military actually said, relevant points include: - The balloon was discovered several days ago and has been tracked continuously since then (likely well prior to when it was over the U.S., hence knowing where it's from). - Similar balloons from China have been observed over the U.S. before. The only difference with this one is that it's taking longer to transit. - The balloon represents no threat to aviation and the U.S. military has assessed it does not offer meaningful intelligence advantages over low earth orbit satellites already deployed by China.
