The first time I watched the news outside the US blew me away. The reporters talked about incidents, gave some facts, interviewed a few locals, then moved on. Then they did it again. And again. I felt like something was missing; I kept waiting for it, but it never came. The reporters never blamed anyone, they never made me angry, or afraid. It was weird.
This was in Taiwan in the early-2000s. I remember one story was about a school in a rural/poor area that flooded so it was shut down temporarily. The parents were upset because they wanted their kids in school. The reporters talked about the situation, interviewed a few people, then that was it. I thought to myself, "Where's the talk about racism/classism? Where's the video of parents shouting at school board officials? So, no one's gonna shove a microphone in a local politician's face and ask misleading questions?" Like I said, it felt weird, like something was missing. I didn't know the news could be like that.
