Can't talk for USA being European living in EU BUT: anyone have ideas, "sides" etc. Journals as well and that's perfectly FINE as long as there are MANY different sources with different ideas. Facts might appear in some, not in others, because of relatives sides, but false fact appearing on some will be normally demolished by those of another side. Some facts will be depicted in positive or negative way, the same fact, depending of the side, but the reader still elicit the fact and distinguish if he/she want the reading part from the factual part. In that case we can "trust the press", simply because having most parts of the spectrum covered, we can read facts and opinion and form OUR personal opinion. When the press is a pravda, essentially al journals tell the same story, omit or cite the same facts, with the same side etc than we can't trust the press. NO MATTER if those who write are honest or not. Even when they tell the truth they will be considered mendacious. Nowadays the trust debt the press have gained, the self-inflicted reputational damage is big enough to be irrecoverable. A new press must then emerge, a press who represent various different opinions people do recognize, not just mocked actors like wrestlers. Until this happen the level of trust will be the same of any dictatorship press by their people. Below zero. BTW similar reputational damage have happened to "international" institutions, local governments and corporations. That's why we are near to the point of a civil war OR the rise of classic local dictatorships with their classic parabola.
