The “Slicing Problem” For Computational Theories Of Consciousness
- proc0 4y agoI think slicing the water computer would produce two distinct minds, even though the experience for each would be the same. I would certainly expect two brains with identical neurons and identical inputs to also produce the same experience. Personally, duplicating consciousness isn't that problematic, and thinking of one's self as unique is only intuitive given the lack of evidence to the contrary (i.e. we're unique because we don't know how to duplicate our minds). Perhaps in a couple decades a "close-enough" mind clone will be in everyone's personal devices, and we will all rely on our digital selves for all kinds of tasks. Somewhat related: the videogame SOMA is a sci-fi horror masterpiece that puts the player through an experience that is basically analogous to some of these thought experiments. Highly recommend.
