an age old discussion.
ultimately i prefer for this technology to be developed in the open on github and be aware of it (and able to combat nefarious use of it).
the alternative is that its being developed hidden and used by the most vile and evil without many being aware of it (which it most definitely will)
As with nuclear, the cats out of the bag or the babys bathwater(?) already spilled, no way to turn back the clock on technological innovation.
- ano88888 4y agonow that it is in the open , any high school boy can create some porn deepfakes of their classmates and suicide rate will probably rise. Let's see if you still hold this view when one of your family members is a victim
- charcircuit 4y agoRule 34 of the internet. It's inevitable.
- number6 4y agoWe are lifing just fine with car related deaths. The rate is much higher than suicide rates. Bullying is alive and well even without this tech. I guess scissoring out a photo from the yearbook and glue it in a porn magazine would work as good. It is not about believability but about the psychological damage when it comes to bullying
- polytely 4y agoBut with cars there is an upside, we tolerate it because it is so usefull and the government does its best to make it as safe as possible, setting requirements that need to be met for you to legally use it. In this case there isn't that much upside, it's basically only being used for non-consensual porn generation and impersonating people
- number6 4y agoUpside: Consensual porn generation and consensual impersonation.
- phtrivier 4y agoThen, it's going to be pretty hard to defend that the "downside-related" usage and the "upside-related" usage are anywhere near each other in terms of volume. To be clearer: yeah, some people are probably creating deepfakes of their own, consensual GFs somewhere on the planet - and more fun to them. There are also comedians doing great things with that. But let's not kid ourselves into the actual, massively majoritary usage: making someone else's life just a tad shittier, either for profit or out of pure meanness. I don't know if there is academically sanctionned data about it to appease the HN-crowd, but when it comes out and says "yeah, statistically, talented comedians and kinky couples are only a fraction of the scammers and revenger-p.rn users.", don't count me suprised.
- saurik 4y agoPeople have been able to draw naked pictures of people forever, and almost anyone with very little skill has been able to create extremely believable realistic fake naked photographs of people for over a decade now. I honestly don't understand the fear here: video is only more believable than a photograph because video is harder to forge... well, now it isn't, so video isn't believable either. But video could already be forged before, it just required more effort and more skill so a bunch of people have chosen to accept a miserable heuristic that it can't be forged and so it is worth always believing it... why is this good? How is this even sort of OK? We should strive to live in a world where video is as farcical as photography.
- wruza 4y agoEffort is what stops people from bullying others at much larger scale. You don’t understand bullying at all. It’s easy for them to kick your ass or say things every time you pass by and it’s hard for them to create anything without single-tap solutions.
- notfed 4y agoHard disagree. Quite the opposite: the existence of deepfakes provides a safety net of plausible deniability. Suicide rates should drop as the technology becomes more prevalent.
- tgsovlerkhgsel 4y agoI disagree. Most scammers are unable to build this. Providing attackers with ready to use tech will increase attacks.
