Honda to start producing new hydrogen fuel cell system co-developed with GM
- pjkundert 4y agoI’ve worked on Compressed Natural Gas vehicles. 3,600psi CNG is interesting enough to handle, and bulky. Compressed Hydrogen at 10,000psi w/ a 1” thick walled wound carbon fiber tank to get even less mileage? With all the metal components going brittle over time? Good luck with that.
- lampshades 4y agoI know nothing about hydrogen fuel cells but I was told when I was young that if they explode it's massive. Is that true?
- foxyv 4y agoI don't know about hydrogen, but CNG at similar pressures results in some crazy stuff. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHf2o9oVY24 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHf2o9oVY24 Edit Note: Hydrogen is about 3x the pressure of CNG
- pornel 4y agoI assume they'll eventually find use in aviation or maybe trucks and heavy machinery. But for passenger cars this seems to be a lost cause. The tanks are huge, so in practice range of hydrogen cars isn't any better than BEV's. The biggest pain of BEVs is lack of reliable public chargers everywhere. But there are far fewer hydrogen stations, and they aren't any easier to build and maintain! And you can't make high pressure hydrogen from a home outlet, so there isn't even a backup.
