i think society has a thermodynamic basis given a group of people, it is much more efficient to e.g. task some people to farming, some to textile production, and some to animal rearing, than expecting each person to spend a portion of their day doing each task and since most people prefer using fewer calories to accomplish the tasks necessary for living, some natural gravitations towards 'society' start springing up
