I think the hype cycle is getting faster. In the last 5-10 years we've seen the birth, huge interested and investment in, and eventual decline of: self-driving vehicles; smart glasses; AI powered home assistants; blockchains; Web3, NFTs and decentralised technology... to name a few.
I'm certainly sceptical. I think ChatGPT is the next poisoned chalice. It's a wildly impressive tech demo which feels like the "next big thing" and will probably suck a huge amount of time and capital until it's realised that there is a marginal benefit to your base product.
It's not to say that AI in general is a waste, rather, more specifically, this feels like Silicon Valley's usual "chasing what is hot in tech" from within their bubble, looking for the next big 10x thing...
