i think what gets missed is that it depends. there are languages and domains where it is possible to write sufficiently succinctly and clearly that you don’t need comments. there are also places where you might want to explain the “why” even if the code is clear. relying on comments to understand the “how” has been a smell in every codebase i’ve seen.
