What you say is true, but then again very little on the cost side of programming has a big bottom-line impact because software is such a high margin industry. So this topic, like many others in software, is largely a matter of personal taste, but that's not to say all opinions are equally distributed among programmers. If most programmers find it more pleasant to read code with good comments, then writing them is a nice courtesy.
