If you find your way to my other comment ("suburban sprawl") this is largely what it looked like to me when I visited my brother. The developments aren't very large and there is roughly nothing around them. Contrast to NJ, where the NYC suburbs extend way outside Midtown and the city limits. As a result, it is very rare to feel like you are in the middle of nowhere.
