- 0xDEF 4y agoI live close to both Silkeborg and Aarhus that have the museums containing the Tollund man and the Grauballe man. I only learned about the Danish bog bodies as an adult while browsing English Wikipedia. The history curriculum in Danish schools is embarrassingly sparse on pre-Christian history. Danish kids probably learn more about the Vikings from Hollywood and video games that in school. But that doesn't cover the pre-Viking history and the cultures of the people who became bog bodies.
- erk__ 4y agoI was taught about the eras with the bronze and Iron age. I think one of the reasons is that teachers have a lot to say about which parts of history they want to teach. This is because the history curriculum (læseplan) is more built up as a series of goals about understanding, than knowledge about specific historical eras.
- Maursault 4y agoAwesome read, short and sweet. But this In 1828, a German traveling salesman and falconer named Johann Spieker died in Lower Saxony, probably by drowning. “His grave was marked with a wooden cross and a fence that remained visible for a long time,” Dr. van Beek said. “During the excavation, only his cloak, some coins and a prayer book apparently were found.” really seemed entirely out of place. Was this part of the conjecture related to missing clothes?
- patrickwalton 4y agoThe "bog of war" sounds like a real world "dead marshes" from Lord of the Rings.
