The focus on detransitioning/regret is basically something fantasical for non-accepting parents to grab onto. "Maybe my kid will just go back to normal! I will convince them they might regret transitioning!" Less than 2% though sounds about right. I generally considered myself in the camp people should do whatever they want... after they turn 18, and can make a fully informed decision. But the problem is that kids have alternatives they can approach prior to age 18: Self-harm and suicide. We can't really take that option off the table. I don't like the idea of encouraging teenagers to make permanent body changes that their parents object to, and I think we should encourage youth who can wait to do so. But trans kids and even regretful trans kids (less than 2%) are way better than dead kids, and people who prefer the latter need to get with the program.

Teenagers generally aren’t making permanent changes to their bodies. Puberty blockers certainly aren’t permanent and have been shown to be safe and effective for medical conditions such as precocious puberty which these anti-trans people seem to be completely ignorant of. However, this seems to be assuming that the objections to trans folk have anything at all to do with the safety or happiness of the trans individual. It does not. The efficacy or treatment for trans folks is completely independent from the bigots perception of the issue. And quite frankly, if the treatments work there is an even stronger indictment from the bigots. They hate the cure worse than they hate the suffering trans folk experience and based on all available evidence I don’t think they hate the suffering of trans people at all. Trans kids suicide isn’t a variable they consider at all. I wonder if we will reach a point where we can stop assuming good faith for people who exhibit none.
