Not trying to incite a flamewar but this reads like a “I want faster horses” type comment. People want a reliable SMTP/IMAP service only until they notice that others get more mileage out of their email inbox and reliability has become table stakes. There is a lot of longstanding pent up demand for a good email solution - hey.com 2021 launch comes to mind and I still remember joining Inbox’s waiting list (circa 2013-14?).
