I've seen people admonish developers to do this for over 30 years now. I've never seen a developer or group of developers be successfully able to deftly navigate the complicated politics around actually doing so.

I've never seen a developer or group of developers be successfully able to deftly navigate the complicated politics around actually doing so. There's a big difference between 30 years ago and now, and that difference is that hardware performance increases has slowed to a crawl. It's possible that in the near future software might start competing on performance again. (I hope.)
