I know a few people who have gone the alternative route; proof of utilities paid, lack of back rent, etc. From the outside looking in it seemed to be a bit more hoop jumping, but overall more palatable than 3 private firms, who don't give damn about you, aggregating your financial history with financial institutions' best interests in mind.
