I was not impressed either, but I used a fairly cheap one. The people raving about them seem to have spent quite a lot on a high-end toothbrush. Manual brushing always feels good to me though. Maybe it's like a lot of things - expensive coffee beans, 144 Hz monitors, dvorak keyboards - the "it's lifechanging!" people are vocal, but 99.9% of people don't care about it at all.
