I think less competition is the reason for the high prices. And 10s of billions needed by a new entrants has given a moat for the current manufacturers. The ban by the US on chinese companies is going to be good for price in the long run I think as China improves its manufacturing quality and capacity. China economy has reached a point where any such bans and restrictions though hamper them for a while are actually beneficial to them as they are able to use home production without falling foul of WTO rules.
