One factor of why Java is so crowded is because the capital city, Jakarta, is in Java. Back when I was a kid (I lived in Java), urbanization is quite popular thing. People from all country go to Jakarta and other major cities in hope that they can make money or to study. At the same time these cities grow to its maximum potential. More people cause growth, and growth invites people. It caused a positive feedback loop. On volcano, I could talk about one particular volcano here, mount merapi. It regularly coughed some lava, not too big to cause countrywide panic, enough to fertilize the land around.
