- xbmcuser 4y agoAnother 5 years I feel before 8tb-10tb ssd are competitive with HDD in price per tb. This crash could bring price to $35-45/tb for flash drives. I think low rewrite capacity Nas SSD drives have big market as a lot of Nas drives are used for storage and access rather than write rewrite I am hoping some manufacturer would target this market before I need to replace HDD on my NAS.
- fulafel 4y agoHeadline is written from DRAM producer POV but for the rest of us... Advances in GB/$$ for DRAM pricing have stalled for many years: https://www.statista.com/statistics/298821/dram-average-unit-price/ https://www.statista.com/statistics/298821/dram-average-unit... (Moore's law would imply per GB cost decrease of 30% per year) The capacity stall is also visible in normal PC build usage. A normal new computer for dev use had 32 GB 5 years ago, extrapolating Moore's law trend from that would put us at 192 GB today.
- xbmcuser 4y agoI think less competition is the reason for the high prices. And 10s of billions needed by a new entrants has given a moat for the current manufacturers. The ban by the US on chinese companies is going to be good for price in the long run I think as China improves its manufacturing quality and capacity. China economy has reached a point where any such bans and restrictions though hamper them for a while are actually beneficial to them as they are able to use home production without falling foul of WTO rules.
