I'll preface my answer by saying I'm US citizen, and a frequent flyer both domestic and international and I have a KTN. I always decline face check-in for international flights.
I've never had my phone checked at an airport other than running it through the imaging scanner. Airlines do request telephone contact info but never have I had security request it. As a matter what of fact I use my home telephone number for airline contact.
The only time I've had electronics checked was a flight home from Bogota. It was a last minute rebooking and their was a extra gate check (unlike the normal passenger gate check) and they simply wanted to see that it powered on.
