The Manhattan project was really two endeavours wasn't it:
1. Work out how to do the precise implosion you describe for the plutonium bomb - very difficult, and required the trinity test to verify
2. Separating enough of the the correct isotope to make the uranium bomb - the science for this was a solved problem, it was just about big engineering
