whatsapp requires to access to contacts on the phopne. otherwise it just shows a bunch of phone numbers and I never get who I'm talking to in the groups. And it shares my phone number to everyone. Such a feature hasn't been changed and now I know why

  As far as I'm aware: 1. People in a conversation with you (including a group conversation you are added to, which I believe you can limit to require your consent) can see your phone number 2. People who already have your number in their contacts can see that your number is registered with WhatsApp

If you don’t give WhatsApp access to your contacts it will show people’s screen names in chats, not just their number. WhatsApp only uploads phone numbers from your contacts. No other information.
