Waste pyrolysis is a technology that has a lot of promise. Basically you bake the waste in a low-Oxygen environment, transforming it into gaseous hydrocarbons that can be burned for energy, liquid hydrocarbons that can substitute for petroleum products, and Carbon-rich solids (charcoal) that can be buried to sequester the carbon. The improvement over incineration is the production of useful byproducts and not releasing the Carbon bound up in the solids.
