This is bogus. Maybe Jack Welch used this system, but humans just like to grade on a curve. Ever since we are kids. Who's the greatest martial artist of all times? Bruce Lee (or Jackie Chan). Who's the greatest basketball player? Obviously Michael Jordan. And next? LeBron, or maybe Curry. We rank people. That's what we do. Jack Welch did not invent that.
- acdha 4y agoIt’s not that simple: the problem with stack ranking is that it overrides human judgement by _forcing_ some people into the under-performing category. This is basically comes back to Goodhart’s law: if you turn management into a simple algorithm, you create a powerful incentive for people to game the metrics, ranging from the type of work you select or how you report it to sabotaging a coworker or even managers hiring someone marginal so they can jettison them rather than one of their favored employees. The problem is that lack of discretion, and that was what Jack Welch made famous while he successfully turned GE into a formerly great company.
