Show HN: Scribe AI – ChatGPT Extension for VSCode
Hi everyone, I'm a junior developer that's been in the work industry for almost 1.5 years and working in the industry, I have to read and understand lots of legacy code and code written by other people. I always thought understanding code written by others to be very time consuming and decided to create a extension to help with that. Seeing as how ChatGPT can be used to understand and modify code, I wanted to integrate it into IDEs. Scribe AI is a VSCode extension that can be used to understand code just by highlighting a piece of code and asking questions about it similar to how you would in ChatGPT. The conversation is saved on your workspace and you can come back to view it later so it's good for note keeping as well. It's currently using the official API of OpenAI to access its GPT models (code-davinci-002 by default) so it's not as performant as ChatGPT but once the official API for ChatGPT is out, I plan to integrate it. It would be awesome if you guys could check it out and let me know if you find it useful or find any bugs or tips and suggestions on how to improve it.
Thanks and happy coding!
- pleb_nz 4y agoI didn't think chatgpt API was available yet? If it's not using chatGPT API I think you should reword/rename everything to be more accurate, including this post, otherwise it stinks of false advertising. I'm sure a lot of people will automatically discount your efforts as soon as they detect the falsehoods. Just my opinion though and I could be wrong.
- anaganisk 4y ago> Note Temporarily, the extension is using Codex, a similar GPT model by OpenAI, instead of ChatGPT, since the official ChatGPT API is not out yet. We do this because using unofficial ChatGPT API is unsupported by OpenAI and it's not reliable. Our team has figured out a way to simulate ChatGPT using OpenAI's current available GPT. It's plain false advertising for now, and I think they know it, that's why the note is at the bottom. Title is also false. There is no ChatGPT involved.
- ajikan 4y agoThat's a really valid point! Thanks for bringing it up. I was debating on whether if I could call this ChatGPT extension since I wasn't actually using ChatGPT but the functionality is really similar to ChatGPT so I wanted to include it in the name somehow... I really did not think people would think it was false advertising and I guess that was naive on my part for not thinking it through . For now I'm thinking of changing the name to "ChatGPT-like Extension for VSCode" what do you think?
