Hey, the steam webpage states:
> Evidence-based and community certified.
While I'm convinced this kind of stuff can help,I wonder what kind of evidence and certification you can build on that kind of game. I didn't find any documentation on the website.
Care to share more ?
- stan_kirdey 4y agoThere are a few games in the U.S. that were able to get FDA approval to be used for treatment. So potentially a game can be certified as a medical device. As it is my hobby project I do my best to collect research evidence on video games and mental health. I did document some of what is out there here https://vortle.medium.com/does-science-back-mental-health-focused-video-games-yes-it-does-and-we-use-science-at-vortle-2e71f7055457 https://vortle.medium.com/does-science-back-mental-health-fo...
- personjerry 4y agoBut those aren't trials on this game, so can you really make a statement like that?
- stan_kirdey 4y agogood point, but I am not saying this game treats any condition
- iancmceachern 4y agoYou need to revise your title, it needs to say "...may help to reduce..." Source- I design medical devices
- personjerry 4y agoIt seems to be what your phrasing is suggesting, so it's disingenuous at best
- klyrs 4y ago> I made a video game to help reduce stress and anxiety Yes, you are.
- LawTalkingGuy 4y agoNo, that's not a condition, that's a symptom. I don't need a study to say that pancakes reduce hunger.
- AlecSchueler 4y agoWould you need a study to say pancakes reduce anxiety? I'm not sure I follow your logic or the distinctions you're making.
- loa_in_ 4y agoAnxiety is anxiety, a feeling. Anxiety disorders are what you mean perhaps? Then there's no mention of the latter.
- LawTalkingGuy 4y agoSomething can reduce anxiety and yet not cure "the APA definition of Anxiety Disorder" or whatever. Also, whether something is a cure is always a personal question. Even if petting kittens is a proven cure it's not going to work for you if you're allergic to them. For pancakes, definitely we'd need a study. They're not commonly accepted as being able to reduce anxiety.
- stan_kirdey 4y agoI see your concern. The two games that are part of Vortle were trialed by others and found to be beneficial and have clinically significant results. I've reimplemented them to use AI and did a bit of different design and game mechanics. Although I can not afford a clinical trial, I did gather feedback from a lot of players on "before/after" feeling and it did show benefit. Doing my best.
